Chapter Thirteen – Cora

Clever human. I had done that, it’d only taken me a moment to adjust the rewards in the first two paths, giving out slivers of gold instead of silver pieces. C-class monsters had already dropped a single gold piece, so I didn’t have to change those. The gold slivers were a bit small at a tenth of an ounce, but it would work.

Nate asked, “What the hell are you talking about?”

I half listened as Jia reiterated the same conversation after explaining what had sparked it, at least that part of it, then said, “I’m sure she’s told Caldin by now. I expect he’ll want to speak to Bobby about it at the end of the day, so our government is informed. This will make it a lot easier to prevent fraud though, if the guild locks up its silver and refuses to use it or accept it at all I mean.”

Bobby nodded, “Good catch.”

Nate said, “The spiders are a little too fast for your bows, I think.”

Cybele shrugged, “Because they were watching us and waiting under the trap. If they’d engaged with you two then we would’ve had a much better chance of hitting them.”

That was a good point.

Cybele said, “Let’s move on, since we’re not the only E-class group using the dungeon today. It’s best not to linger too long between rooms, until we get to the safe room anyway. We don’t need the other groups annoyed with us, and us lingering too long could have us sanctioned and fined by the guild.”

The others agreed, and they moved down the tunnel.

I said, “I think I’m ready to open the B-class path. I’ll do it tonight, so I can upgrade my final path as well, at the same time. I’ll need the dungeon empty.”

Amethyst smirked, “Are you using all nine?”

I hummed, “No. The shiny steel ones for the big guys, to draw their attention. The support ones in the air will be the gray metal creations, because they’ll be hard to see up high and against the stone which is a similar color. I went with onyx steel for the subterranean ones, that will burst from the floor and swarm them. Hopefully they’re a solid B-class threat taken together, we’ll see tomorrow.”

I returned my attention to the new group, which fascinated me. An elf, and three humans from this world. One of them was notably the one that had escaped from the underground government research and testing facility. I’d been paying more attention to Jia than the others, which is why I’d overheard that gold conversation. She was an outlier, and I could also tell she had a lot of potential. She wasn’t a warrior, at least not until today. I could scent Jia’s fear and uncertainty through the monster’s senses, but her bearing was all icy confidence and competence. Clearly, she was faking it until she made it.

Amethyst asked, “Any luck with the animals I brought in last night?”

I replied, “Not yet, the DNA sequencing is still running on them.
